In a binge-watching world, television characters are becoming popular choices for Halloween costumes. We are also seeing these outfits more often due to the popularity of comic book and cosplay culture. That’s just two of many great reasons to build a television character costume of your own!
Parks and Recreation may not be widely known for its costume choices, it definitely had its fair share of memorable looks. You have Tom’s suits, Chris’ workout gear, and Ann’s scrubs. My personal favorite is Ron Swanson sporting cornrows and a kimono.
Any Parks and Recreation fan knows about the many looks of April Ludgate. She started off in “20s slacker” fashion. As both the series and character grew, her clothing grew along with her.
At the same time, April also had a few occasions where she dressed much differently. She has a few classic situational outfits that were included in some of the series’ best episodes.
If you are thinking about being April Ludgate for Halloween, cosplay, or because it’s Thursday, look no further. Today I am going to guide you through three of April’s classic looks. You will be building an April Ludgate Halloween costume in no time!
April Ludgate Halloween Costumes
Classic April Ludgate
When you imagine April Ludgate, you probably think of this outfit. This is also the outfit used for her Funko action figure. While this look didn’t come into play until later in the series, April was known for wearing yellow. Matter of fact, April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was also known for wearing yellow. Coincidence?
This is a fairly easy look to pull of as it is made out of regular clothing. There are no real flashy props or expensive items. I think this shows the true power of this character. We know her outfit even though it is nothing crazy.
Since this costume is not made up of rare items, you can probably find most of these items at a local thrift store or department store. Amazon also has a lot of great options for clothing. Just make sure that you know your measurements before shopping online.
You Will Need:
A Yellow Hoodie, Jacket, or Cardigan – Longsleeve and yellow works for this. You don’t have to be too picky. Amazon has a similar sweater that is Prime eligible.
A Blue Skirt – Getting the color and length is the most important here. It should be just above the knee and dark blue. Don’t be afraid to buy something longer and hem/shorten it yourself. Always keep your budget in mind.
A Polka Dot Top – This is probably the most difficult item to find. There are plenty of polka dot tops out there, but finding one that matches April’s may prove to be a challenge. I was able to find something similar on Amazon.
A Pair of Brown Boots – I have seen people use flats for April costumes as well. However, I like the boots better because they give off that angsty-Daria vibe.
A Small Messenger or Purse – Tie off the classic April look with a small brown bag. A small shoulder bag or satchel would work as well.
The wealthy widow known as Janet Snakehole is one of April Ludgate’s most popular personas. While April used the name previously, Janet Snakehole did not fully emerge until an episode called “The Fight”. This is episode thirteen of Parks and Recreation season 3. You probably know this as the episode where everyone gets blacked out on Snake Juice.
For those of you who need a refresher, April and Andy attend Tom Haverford’s debut of his new liquor, Snake Juice. April decides to play a rich and mysterious widow. She has kind of a Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibe. Andy, in typical fashion, becomes the famous FBI Agent known as Bert Macklin. The gang then proceeds to drink a lot of Snake Juice, and nearly everyone blacks out. Even Ron Swanson ends up dancing while wearing Ms. Snakehole’s pillbox hat.
You Will Need:
An Old School Black Dress – Vintage clothes can be found in a variety of places. Check out thrift stores, boutiques, and consignment shops for something good. Amazon also has a great selection of vintage-style clothing.
A Pearl Necklace and Wristlet – While real pearls would be a nice touch, there is no need to break the bank on this costume. This is especially true if you are only going to wear this outfit once. Pick up some white beaded necklaces and call it a day.
A Black Pillbox Hat With Veil – This is probably the most difficult part of this costume. It may be easier to find a the hat, then add the veil using some lace and hot glue.
A Cigarette Holder – Whether you smoke or not, this is a key element to the Janet Snakehole outfit. Cigarette holders can be bought online easily. If you are in a pinch, you can paint a straw black, or use the tube of a pen.
You Will Need:
Red and White Facepaint – This is an easy item to find. Most grocery and department stores carry them around Halloween season. However, I would say that this is not an item to be cheap with. Good face paint will last through an entire party. There is nothing worse than seeing pictures of your smeared and cracked face.
Black Sweater or Hoodie – Everyone has one of these laying around. It just so happens that black hoodies are the best piece of clothing for fall weather.
A White Dress Shirt – Any old white collared shirt will do here. No need to get fancy about it.
A Long Red Scarf – April uses a long red piece of cloth tied into a giant sloppy bow. I think the easiest way to replicate this would be to use a long red scarf. I was able to find a similar one on Amazon.
Pink Ribbon – It looks like April is using pink mesh ribbon to tie around her pigtails. This is easily obtainable in the craft stores. Department stores will most likely have this in their craft section as well.
A Pink Tutu – This item is typically available at party stores. I am sure that many department stores will also carry this item during October. You can also grab one on Amazon.
