Crossbones #1 is written by JD Gonzales. The art is by Roman Gubsky. There is currently one issue of the comic which premiered on February 27th of 2019. The book is published by Covenant Comics. Crossbones is a crime drama with superhero elements.
The city of San Diablo is very unique. The United States-Mexico border crosses through the middle of the city. It is also the home of the Los Demonios Cartel, who is the employer of our protagonist named Crossbones. When a new and hyper-potent drug hits the streets, Crossbones finds himself in the middle of a reality-tearing feud with a rival gang.
Crossbones #1 Review
I thought the coloring in Crossbones was fantastic. The book is very colorful and the shading is excellent. Gubsky really captured the sunny and arid environment of Crossbone’s setting. I found this book to be very immersive, and coloring was a factor in that.
My favorite panel (or panels, technically) comes just a few pages into the story. The first time we see Crossbones’ face, it is split into two panels. In one panel, Crossbones is speaking in Spanish. The second panel has him speaking in English.
Crossbones is a tale of life, death, and morality. There is a lot of spiritual imagery, including both Christian and Greek mythology. The plot confronts the characters with their past misdeeds. I am sure this will continue to unfold as the series progresses.
Like many first issues, Crossbones leaves you with just enough plot hints to keep readers curious. I am not quite sure what is happening, but I am excited to find out. As if issue one wasn’t crazy enough, seems like the story is really going to go off of the rails in the next issue. Crossbones seems like it is off to a great start, make sure you keep an eye on this series!
