Battle royale-style games have been incredibly popular over the past year. A lot of this is due to the popularity of games like Fortnite and PUBG. Whenever a new genre or style of game becomes popular, developers look for ways to put their own spin on things.
We are now seeing unique takes on the battle-royale genre. Today we are discussing a game that predates this recent rush of “last man standing” games. Black Survival is a point-and-click PVP survival game.
Black Survival is created by a Korean-based developer known as Archbears. It looks like this their only game at the moment. If their future games are anywhere near as great as Black Survival then we are in good hands.
Black Survival was released in February of 2015. The game is available for Windows, Android, and IOS. The game is still being updated regularly. The matchmaking times (at least on android) are fairly quick. There seems to be a dedicated fan base that are willing to help new players learn this unique mashup of game styles.
How To Play Black Survival
Black Survival takes place on an island containing twenty-two areas and nine other competitors to play against. We can travel between these areas by clicking them on the map. Clicking on the background picture of a specific area will allow us to loot items.
While there are certain items that can randomly appear anywhere, most materials will only show up in one or two locations. For example, the Knife can be found at the Well or the Pond. Long Swords can be found in the Cemetary or Chapel.
Black Survival works in rounds/matches. In each game we start over new and can pick a new character. There are many characters to choose from and each have their own abilities and play styles. Like most mobile games, there are daily and weekly quests, multiple currencies and a lot of things to buy.
Characters and skins can be purchased through the different forms of currency. This system is similar to other battle arena games such as League of Legends. There are other bonuses and vanity items that can be purchased as well. Similar to other games, there is a weekly rotation of free characters to let us try them before buying.
After we have our character set up it is time to get into the game. I would recommend utilizing the game’s tutorial as well as playing a few practice matches to get acclimated to the gameplay mechanics.
When the game starts we are in the opening area by ourselves. We enter the game by selecting our first location. The first location choice is very important as there are limited quantities of each item.
There are also popular areas where many people tend to start. For example, many characters using blade or stab weapons will make their way to the Temple early on. We want to be traveling from area to area getting the items that we need!
Crafting Combinations and Routes
The best items in game are made through combining smaller, less important items. This is another mechanic that Black Survival shares with MOBA-style games such as League of Legends and DOTA.
For example, a sharpened kitchen knife can be made by combining a kitchen knife with a whetstone. Combining a sharpened kitchen knife with another kitchen knife will make dual blades.
This is where routes come in handy. To survive we need weapons, armor, food, and drink. This is a lot of materials to track. It can be confusing when we do not know where to do next.
Advanced players will memorize which materials they need and where they are found. When the game starts they strategically move from location to location gathering the materials they know they will need.
There is also a tracking system which will allow us to see the materials needed for a single item. While this may help at the start, memorizing the ingredients and locations will help speed up our gameplay.
Like many battle royale and battle arena games, Black Survival restricts the playing field to ensure the players fight each other. Otherwise, we could all stay in our own area and never die. What is the fun in that? This game mechanic pushes the players closer and closer as the game progresses.
Every few minutes, the game will turn off a few of the areas on the map. Anyone in those areas is instantly killed. The other player will no longer be allowed to travel to restricted areas.
This adds another layer of difficulty to the game because ingredients are also being restricted. Luckily, the game tells us what areas are being turned off ahead of time. We can scramble around for the items we need before the timer goes off.
Adaptability is the key to success. If we know an area we need is going to be restricted we need to quickly decide what to do. We can change the items we want to ones who are not restricted.
We can also change our route to hit the soon-to-be restricted areas before it is too late. This is another example of why it is so important to learn the areas and items of this game.
Black Survival’s Combat System
If you are looting the same area as another player you will be given the chance to attack them instead of gathering ingredients. When this occurs, we can choose to attack, run or use abilities.
After the damage goes through we can then click the background to attempt to loot again. If the enemy is still there we can attack once again.
However, it is important to be careful when slugging it out. Other players may hear the commotion and come join the fun. We may run out of food or drinks. We may not be able to move until it is too late. If a player is much stronger they will kill us in just a few hits. It is a gank or be ganked world. Hopefully we will be the former.
There are also animals and minibosses that pop up around the map as well. Some of these NPCs are very hard to damage and can pack a wallop when returning damage. Fighting these monsters can leave us in a vulnerable position. However, they also drop valuable loot and hard-to-find items that can help us survive.
There are other aspects of combat which I will not get into here. I wanted this article to be a basic rundown of the game. I have added a list of resources at the bottom of this article for more questions.
My Black Survival Review
I have been playing this game for about a week now…and what a week it has been. I may not be the best player, but I have been addicted to this game. The fast-paced nature of the game is awesome. Also, I like that it makes me think. Black Survival is not a mindless game, and it requires high levels of strategy and quick fingers.
The aesthetic of this game in general is just great. The anime-style artwork may not be for everyone, but Black Survival goes out of its way to make a fun and interesting post-apocalypse setting. Many of the items include pop culture Easter eggs and jokes. The backgrounds look bleak which helps create the dark atmosphere of the game.
I love the character designs. Each character has their own distinct look and personality. Many of them seem reminiscent of or may be homages to characters in television, movies, and comics. The skins are another great addition to the game.
I also enjoyed the diversity in the character’s abilities. Some of the characters awesome combinations built into their abilities. I liked how the mechanics ranged from the battle-based to the metaphysical.
My one criticism with the characters is that the character selection is set up in a way that makes it look like there are more characters than there are. We can sort the characters by weapon type, but each character has 4 different weapon types.
This means each character falls under four different categories. I kind of wish there was an option to sort by primary weapon type. Regardless, the game still has an awesome selection of characters and more are being added.
I thought the game was easy at first. This is because I was ranked low in terms of matchmaking. During my second game I was able to kill all 9 of the other players.
This did not last long as I progressed into better matchmaking leagues. I now die all the time…which I am completely fine with. This game is largely skill-based and I am a new player.
Even though this game does not have a lot of motion or animation I still find it to be extremely anxiety-provoking. In shooting games, you never know who is around the corner. In Black Survival, your worst enemy is always one click away. I find myself holding my breath as I navigate around the map.
Overall, Black Survival is a solid and entertaining game. It offers a unique spin on the popular battle-royale genre. Not only is Black Survival a fast paced game of clicking and tapping, it also makes you think. The dark aesthetic fits the gameplay perfectly. I would recommend this game to any fans of action-packed multiplayer games.
Top 10 Black Survival Tips
- Learn common item combinations and locations! I cannot stress this enough.
- Load up bookmarks with items you want to learn. I use one bookmark slot for one of each weapon type. This way I can have a recipe handy regardless of what character I am using.
- Do not underestimate the power of food and drink. Eating bread to restore 20hp does nothing when you are being hit for over 60hp. Make yourself some good noms.
- Use your character’s abilities! I do not do this enough. Since I am still learning locations and recipes I am usually frantically running around looking for something.
- Don’t be afraid to run! Keep moving around if you are feeling overwhelmed. There is no point in slugging it out with someone stronger than you.
- Log in every day! The daily rewards offer great gifts including new characters and skins that normally cost a lot.
- Save up 500 Bear Points before turning them in. Black Survival lets you draw six cards for 500BP. This is better than 100BP for one card. Since there are so many quests, BP is fairly easy to come by.
- Learn to click fast! More clicks equals more transactions. Sometimes one extra piece of loot can make or break your game.
- Try the trial characters as they are on rotation. You may find an awesome character that have been sleeping on.
- Find what play style works best for you. I am not a big fan of guns or bows in this game. I typically go for blade/stab characters. However, having fun is the most important part, pick who you like!
